Childhood
Growing up in Uppsala
Uppsala is a fairly quite, rather conservative, university city in Sweden. It has heaps of historical sites and buildings. It was once the capital of a big viking kingdom. Just outside the modern city centre is Old Uppsala (Gamla Uppsala). At this site there was a big heathen temple where they sacrifised animals and people (!) to the gods. Several kings and important chiefs are burried in huge burial hills in the area. The temple was later demolished and a church built upon its foundation when Sweden somewhat reluctantly became christian around the 12th century. This was all very exciting for a little chap growing up in Uppsala of course. My personal history lessons included mountainbiking on the excellent burial hills. Now days they're sealed off because of errosion...
