The Project

In early 1997 I bought myself an appartment at Lilla Nygatan 11 in Gamla Stan (the old town) in Stockholm. The house was built in 1643, so it has a lot of charm but also a lot of quirks. Several renovations of the house, as well as conversion from offices to apparments, had taken away some of the charm of the place.

To restore some of the original charm the entrance and stairs was renovated during that year. Also the windows in the house were replaced by handmade ones closer to the original style. Inspired by another tenant in the house, Johan Palmgren, who was meticulously renovating his place I also embarked on a project of my own.

The appartment is pretty small at 30 square meters, rough floor plan showned on the left. I was very determined to utilize the space best possible, while also creating a charming place with an edge. I guess having grown up looking at countless houses with my architect father also inspired my creative touch.

Due to the fact that there was a lot of 'layers' of renovation and changes in the appartment I ended up doing a major overhaul of the kitchen and hallway area. This included tearing down the walls, taking away the floor and putting in new level beams with a new floor on and a new handmade custom kitchen.

I would like to thank Michael Lundin for all the great work he put in, as well as for all the good advice from this very knowledgeable carpenter with a background in renovation and construction. I would also like to thank Johan Palmgren for advice and moral support as well as all my patient neighbours.
